References in today's business world?

Do companies still focus heavily on these? I'm applying for a position and I honestly have no idea where any of my former managers/directors work now or how to contact them. In the day and age of job hopping, how much emphasis is put on references. Thinking about just putting a couple of my buddies down.

Taco bell doesn't worry much about them, you should be fine.

Seems like you could locate them on LinkedIn

Depends on the field you're in.

If this is the case, they probably don't want to be a reference for you.

Not all that much, honestly.
Most companies are so scared they will be sued due to saying something, that they kick all reference checks to HR, and HR will just tell you when they worked there, title, if they are rehire-able, and sometimes confirm salary. But that's mostly it.
Therefore, true references have become tougher to validate. If you're on the fence about a hire, and you know someone that knows that person, or has some other connection to them, then the best way is to have a back-channel phone call or lunch about them so that nothing is written.

We never call them but ask for them just to see if the person flakes. References are garbage. We may call a company and confirm you worked there, that's about it.
