Many are. Reed's doing some real measurements here, and also launching rockets at a tornado which is worth it on it's own.

You can get a lot of amateurs out on big days though, and the traffic is going to get someone killed.

Outside of gathering data which helps improve forecasting, the main thing that comes to mind for me is how they can help verify tornadoes actually being on the ground, which helps improve the “false alarm ratio” when it comes to tornado warnings. Studies have also shown that people are more likely to act (take shelter) when there is a confirmed tornado on the ground, and confirmation often comes through chaser reports and videos. I know of some guys here in Alabama who don’t chase for money or fame, they just do it to help get warnings to people.
