Deliberate ignorance of this sort has never been an acceptable defense--not until recently, at least. I've seen the DOJ prosecute people on the exact same grounds. They do it all the time.

Their Executives knew they were passing drug money, the government knew it and the government told them--and HSBC admitted employees changed key information to bypass US control points. They ignored it all which is just the same as doing it. When others tried to stop it, they were fired or told to stop.

If HSBC had a leg to stand on, they wouldn't have paid a two billion dollar fine.
