Seems odd that we wouldn't have heard something that close until now. We've been listening for decades now.

We’d have to be listening at just the right frequency at just the right place though

Feeling about the same. Staying inside, planted in my recliner. Hopefully it will pass. To top things off, I had a coughing fit yesterday and woke up this morning with a Warfarin bleed in my right eyeball, so it looks awful. Has happened before and should clear in a week or so, unless it gets worse.

Could be a stupider question by me, but could this be radio waves that we sent out, bouncing off an object and back to us?

This is almost certainly the answer. When they figure out that 980mhz is the carrier frequency for the aftermarket remote start system that Pablo from facilities just installed, expect the press coverage to be much more muted.

This thing is listening for signals from the ground. Stands to reason that it would be some satellite or derelict space junk, especially considering the short duration of the signal and the fact that it never came back.

Not a stupid question at all. Amateur HAM operators can bounce radio signals off of ionized meteor trails during meteor showers and get confirmed two-way communication, so a signal from the ground bouncing off of something in orbit isn't outlandish at all.

They'll also bounce signals back and forth off the Moon.

Breaking news. They’ve deciphered the signal and it reads as follows:
