Rabies - how long after exposure do you have to get treatment?

Friday evening relative gets bit by a horse that may have rabies. The horse's head won't get to the testing lab until tomorrow. So far, no treatment of any kind as they are "waiting for the lab results?"
I'm thinking "two or three days seems like a long time", especially since it is pretty likely from the horse's actions that it has rabies (tore down two stalls, slobbering profusely, bit a hose and the hose locked up in its mouth).
Anyone had any experience or any of our beloved physicians want to chime in on this?

You don’t want that treatment cycle unless you absolutely have to have it. I think the doctors probably know best versus the OT. My son was bitten. Same thing wait on test results. He didn’t die.

Bit by a rabid horse. That's a new one for the OT.
FWIW the rabies shots used to be an ordeal. They're not so bad any more.

Man I just read up on rabies. Should get shot immediately and another three days later.Google it. I would be on phone big time or at urgent care.

Yes, It used to be a series of them. Now it's in the arm, and not as many.

Michael Scott does a whole fun run race for the cure and people still scoff at rabies. When will we learn it’s dangers ?

Google says otherwise
quote:
Rabies is life-threatening to horses and humans. ... However, bats, raccoons, foxes, cats, dogs, and livestock can become infected and pass rabies on to other animals. Its occurrence is uncommon relative to other diseases, which cause neurologic signs in thehorse, but it is important as it can be spread to humans.
quote:
Exposure occurs through the bite of an infected (rabid) animal, typically a wildlife source such as raccoon, fox, skunk, or bat. Bites to horses occur most often on the muzzle, face, and lower limbs. The virus migrates via nerves to the brain where it initiates rapidly progressive, invariably fatal encephalitis.
