Where do find the motivation to keep giving it your all at your job?
Certainly not giving it my all like I used to, but still good enough to get Exceptional ratings.

I'm 60 and can retire, but my wife (no pics) the hot nurse is 8 years younger and the deal is that I work until the last kid is out of school (I only have two years).

Then, the plan is she'd continue to work but we'd travel, living in different cool cities as she's a travel nurse.

But it's difficult. What does drive me however are several things: I work w some great people for a great company where I don't mind what I do and there's always work to do. I would be foolish to give it up now the $$$ now given all that (I'm a Tech manager). Also, there are a number of upgrades my little farm could use that would be stretched out if I didn't work.

My advice to you, as others have stated, is to find joy outside of work. Working at hobbies or DIY projects or volunteer to help other people. Also, if you are not already in good shape via vigorous exercise, find a way to get there as that will help w energy.

Not to mention you can do all of that and still get screwed over because of nepotism or favors or just because someone doesn't like you.

It’s also a numbers game. When I was hired out of college I was on a team of 10 people. That’s 10 people vying for one promotion opportunity within our department. Those opportunities opened up a little at the next level as you could switch departments, but advancement opportunities were still finite. And what did those that got promotions do? Worked long hours, kissed arse, and played the office political game. I could do the office politics, but the other two weren’t in my appetite, especially after being told repeatedly during the interview process it was a 40 hour per week position. And notice I didn’t say did an exceptional job in their position. Some did, others didn’t. It was all bullshite, so I switched careers.

i agree with this. but the important part of this is that we all have the choice to enter the rat race, or to sit it out.

if you want to be a teacher for holistic reasons, or just want to be able to travel during the summers....great. if you are driven to successful in whatever you choose, we all have that choice as well.

the questions is then, what is your responsibility as a parent to your kids? again, a choice each one of us is allowed to make.

that might be Little Rock; of the people who died in that crash, about half were from the general area of the newspaper I was working at; so happened that I knew one of the folks on the plane who lived; got a great story out of it; horrible story, actually

So you’re in a rut. Keep moving forward doing what you need to do. Expect your situation to get better and it will.
It’s like the saying, “When you’re going through hell, keep going.”
