In town, go for a smaller diameter goto. Light buckets inside light domes get washed out with too much background light.

I've considered getting one but two things make me think it would kill the fun:

1. Re-centering (solved with computerized)
2. Finding good spots around me to take it out

For 99% of the people this how it goes.

1. Look at the moon.
2. Look at Jupiter’s moons
3. Look at the rings of Saturn
4. Look at Mars.
5. Maybe drag it out to a dark area a couple of times to view some of the easier to see star clusters.
5 Store in closet until it is sold at a garage sale 10 years later.

If anyone in the BR area is looking for one, I have a Zhumell Z8 8" Dobsonian that's just collecting dust. I paid $400 for it a few years ago and then bought a couple extra eye pieces. I believe I have 1" 4mm, 9mm, and 15mm. And a 2" 26mm for a larger field of view.

These are just a few photos I've been able to do with just snapping photos with my phone up to the eyepiece.

I have an 8 inch Dob and it’s the best starter scope in my opinion

That’s incredible! Wow! How do you take the pictures? I’m just using an iPhone mounted to my eyepiece.

Here’s a video I took of Jupiter and moons. I can see the colors and bands of Jupiter but my camera won’t capture it.

3200 at an estate sale. Wish I’d bought the 14” celestron too.

I'll have to get another Imgur album thrown together lol. This is the only other one I've taken at my Mom's place in Alabama under dark skies. This was just my Note 10 and a long exposure. Milky Way is visible to the top right and the Andromeda Galaxy is just right of the tree limb.

Stars

Dobsonians are more for viewing rather than imaging. The object drifts through the eyepiece and you have to bump it and move it along to keep it in view. They do make equatorial platforms (think large circular plywood powered by a clock motor) that can help keep the item in view and move with the Earth's rotation. But even then it's still not the ideal setup for imaging

The reason your eye can see it but not the camera is due to the exposure. Jupiter is really bright, and your eye will adjust to where you can see the bands and the moons simultaneously. But you should have a pro-mode on the camera where you can adjust it down and capture the bands & GRS.

The best astrophotography images are done with a DSLR without the lense and an adapter hooked up to the eyepiece, to where the telescope essentially becomes the lense for the camera. Thousands of images are taken and then stacked using software to produce a high resolution image. This same process can also be done with red, green, and blue filters to produce color images of nebulas, etc.

My next door neighbors probably think I’m completely nuts. They can see me from their upstairs windows in my backyard at 2:00 am, crouched over, wearing a full mosquito net suit.
