Question for OT plumbers

I (almost certainly) have a clogged main sewer drain - black water coming up in the showers and everything. How much damage should my checking account expect tomorrow?

Plugged main or need the septic tank emptied? Plugged main is like $150 or so. Septic emptied is like $400.

Same thing happened to me last week. I tried liquid plumber, etc. Went to local hardware store, they recommended a product called liquid fire. It worked. May want to give it a try before a plumber snakes your drain lines

If that is the shite forms smoke in your toilet it most definitely works. It may give you cancer but it works.

Have the city come out first, could be on their end. Then look into a plumber.

I had two oak trees in front of my house and the roots had found their way into the junction where the city ties into the property. I had a camera run down and had them write up a report so I could give it to the city for them to come out and fix. Sure enough they did. It would’ve cost me like 5k if I would’ve had to pay for it since it consituted digging down 6 ft and breaking the sidewalk and replacing it when it was fixed. Huge pain but I didn’t pay a dime. Surprised the hell out of me that the city took care of it. And in a pretty timely manner too. Within the week I think. Good luck

Quiet Tiger's advice is the same as mine. I have to do this every three years. Know a guy who works for the city who told us to call them first, because it might be them. They come out within an hour.
Plumber is $175.00. If you call around, you might find different prices and ability. One company in my town has two service vehicles outfitted with portable machines they carry right to the basement drain. Fast and efficient. One time I had another guy do it, and he had to assemble 25 foot sections in the backyard and feed it down to the basement. He then used a hand held fence post drilling looking thing from the backyard, down the steps and into the drain. Took him hours and cost me a lot more.

This should’ve happened the second you found the problem. Even if it doesn’t resolve it, calling the utility should always be the first step.

If you use liquid fire and it doesn’t work, make sure you let the plumber know. That stuff can burn the hell out of you. I don’t recommend it at all

It literally just happened tonight, completely out of the blue. I've got a pregnant wife that can't be bothered to put up with this 1 second longer than necessary, so I was planning on getting a plumber out first thing tomorrow. We've got a couple good ones in my area that I trust.

Might have tree roots in your drain, in which case it's a little more complicated than just a clog.
