Question for OT mechanics

2012 Ford Expedition with 80K miles has check engine light on. Took to mechanic and he said O2 sensor on drivers side needs replacing and the catylitic converter on the same side is showing heat spikes and needs replacing. Also tested the passenger side and the converter on that side also showed a spike in temperature though not as frequent as the drivers side. What say you mechanics of the OT, is it time to change at least the drivers side converter or can I procrastinate a little bit?

Check your warranty. CC's are mandated to be warrantied despite change in ownership.
Think it is 75 or 80k, but manufacturers vary.
Worst case a CC failure will just severely limit the power of the engine until you get it fixed.

O2 sensor is really easy to change yourself. Never did the catalytic converter.

O2 sensor?
Nah.

If it's the sensor before the cat it will likely run rich as hell.

Yes, they will run like shite with a bad O2 sensor

News to me. Mine have been out for about two years.

quote:O2 sensors and cc's are on vehicles for the sole purpose of making vehicles burn unnecessary fuel. When O2 sensor quits working, the computer is programmed to make vehicle burn more fuel bc people in the 80's were adding oxygen to fuel to burn more efficiently. CC is in your vehicle for the sole purpose of burning off the excess gas that is force through the system.
O2 sensor
The problem with changing O2 sensor is how hard is it get to it and has it partially welded on from the natural heat. Expedition probably isn't too hard to do bc usually have some space.
Mechanics will always try to scare you into fixing crap that doesn't need to be fixed.
