LSU IE grad here.
Biggest thing the curriculum helped with with was how to systemitize my thinking. Most of degree at the time was about optimization of resources from traffic management to capex stewardship to manufacturing/process optimization to data systems.
It does not matter whether I make whiffle ball bats or cars, I view the process as a system with different variables to adjust. I can make small changes and watch the outcome, and then redesign my limiters. I was more proficient in organizing my thoughts and developing plans with limited resources than my peers. It actually gave me a leg up in terms of seeing what management saw without being told.
That said, I hated manufacturing and went into drilling. More money and time off.

Say a piece of rotating equipment is leaking oil after 500 hours of run time. Is there a way to increase this fail mode to 10,000 hours?
Say you have a mixer that is chewing through sleeves every 2 months. Can you find out if there is a coating or different material all together to increase run time to 10 months?

The previous poster, LSU grad, was interesting as well. Appreciate the responses. The information one receives in an IE program definitely seems worthwhile, which is what I was questioning before. Good stuff, good stuff TD!

As already said an IE is to engineering as an MBA is to business. Few MBA guys actually start a business, they work for a business and optimize it. Few IE actually engineer an original concept, they optimize it.
A very popular and lucrative academic route is IE undergrad to MBA, when I was at Auburn I believe they had a 5 year program for this. Although it was very demanding. As said Tim Cook has this, IE from Auburn and MBA from Duke. Though I know that’s an absurd example.
I’ll tell you if you like to be more hands on engineering I would lean much more toward the civil, mechanical, etc. route. IE is often more math, systems, and statistics based. That’s why there’s more women.

I consider myself a kid: almost 30
You can say I’m considering it, but I’m considering other things as well. Thing is, I got 5 years experience as a millwright and 5 years experience as a truck driver. Been driving, but looking to get back into industry. But if I’d make such a move, I’m going to make a career out of it and stick with whatever I’d do. But in this post I just wanted some clarification on the career, which delivered

I have an IE degree and work for a forging company. When I started I did a lot of little projects working closely with ops. For example, documenting hammer setup processes and working to optimize. I also performed cost-benfit analysis for cap-ex projects and coordinated projects from design to full-scale production Now I'm a production supervisor over the area for which I coordinated my largest cap-ex project.
It is a very broad major that can send people into a huge number of industries.
