How hard is it for an NCO Marine to get a sidearm through on a deployment to the Middle East? TIA

?
I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you asking if they can carry their own personal sidearm?
If so...

Why would you bring your own gun when uncle sam is providing free guns and ammo?

That 44 magnum will fit nicely in your sea bag! And look great on your hip!

Realistically, probably encounter slight difficulties. I'm sure I could hide a dead hooker's body on the carrier and offload it in Bahrain, but what's the point? If he's looking to bring one to sale, or take one from there to bring home, he's looking at multiple years of confinement if and when caught. There bags may be x-rayed when leaving or arriving, most likely when returning.

You will not get your own personal sidearmed through

Depending on your rank/mos you might get issued a Beretta 9mm but again also unlikely for a Cpl or Sgt

If your Armory doesnt issue you a 9mm, you aint getting shite other than a M4.

You're not getting a personal side arm thru hero.

Yea that's not gonna happen. Any weapon you get while deployed is issued from the armory and that shitnis tracked hard core.

Doable, but risky. My anecdotal story follows.

It would have to be a M9 or other "official" sidearm. One of the guys I went to Iraq with (2004-05) did this and went unnoticed for half the deployment until he wore it at the same time the monthly sensitive items inventory occurred.

The inspecting officer saw it and asked for the serial number. The guy balked and the gig was up. The unit confiscated the pistol, kept it in the "arms room", gave him a local letter of reprimand, and shipped it home in the sensitive items MILVAN. He got it back but he didn't last too much longer in the Army.

I would recommend against it.

My question is why would a Marine NCO have to ask this question?

But the answer is pretty hard and pretty foolish.

Yes, really. A sidearm won't do you much good in Afghanistan, this isn't cops or call of duty

Some people grow very fond of a particular type/brand of weapon and feel they perform remarkably better with that particular model.
They may indeed perform better with it, but that is usually due to a much higher degree of familiarity. That familiarity probably resulted from far more use (100s or 1000s more rounds fired) than they have with their service pistol.
Increased familiarity and comfort with a certain weapon results in more confidence when firing it. Weapons manipulation reigns supreme when engaging targets!
Any day you have to resort to drawing your sidearm is usually a very bad day.
