With so many angles to play here, I think the board is frozen with indecision.

Your car's first issue is its owner not being able to tell the mechanic the symptoms in an understandable manner.

Second, I guess it kind of sounds like an ignition switch issue.

I'll try again once I now what the frick is going on.

Sounds like you are low on starter fluid. Did you check your starter fluid level?

Sounds like the solenoids on the serpentine belt are not communicating appropriately with your rotors.

I don't know about yours, but lots of vehicles have the starter keep spinning until the vehicle starts even if you let go of the key. It sounds like your vehicle has a little something that is keeping it from starting right away. I would try the simple stuff....like plugs/plug wires, fuel filter, etc.

On some newer vehicles, once you turn the key, the starter will turnover until the engine starts. My last two trucks have been like this. Just turn the key briefly and let the truck start.

I assume it will turnover for only so long until it aborts, which may be why it is still turning when you let go of key.

Common problem for this car. Do not over top tank on any car, it can screw up the purge valve and pollution control crap. If the light is on, have someone run the code. Purge valve in the emissions system could be the problem, but you have multiple valves that could be bad in the system.

There is a sensor in the gas tank that is corroded/bad and needs to be replaced. This is a tank overfill sensor.

You are losing fuel system pressure when you open the gas cap.

The system is designed to be pressurized to start to get fuel to the fuel rails. Could the fuel pump is failing or a vent not closing.

See if this matches your symptoms.
