Growing up we would always just take the dog into the woods and one shot with a .22. If you can't handle get a buddy to do it for you.

My vet examined our lab before she put her down. It wasn't a full physical, though. It actually reinforced our decision; her blood pressure was extremely low & she wouldn't have lasted more than a few more days.

My dad is a vet and our dog is on monthly heartworm medicine. He maybe checks once a year for heartworms. Probably not even that often. Why would you check if the dog is taking the medicine?
There isn’t a single test that healthy humans get quarterly, much less when they are taking prophylactic medicine for it.
I want to see someone try to defend this. What a quack

I am not a vet. Just an outside observer. I would not pay $200 for an exam on a healthy dog much less one that needed to be put down. $65 a quarter for medicine that should be available over the counter anyway! LOL but sure—clean my dogs teeth.

If everything you are saying is true, your old vet is shitty.
However, your outrage is unexplainable, based on the facts you've presented.
If the facts you've presented are true, and in fully disclosed context, all you do is say no, that's unreasonable, and go to another vet.
Also, at some point, you should have figured out quarterly heartworm tests are inappropriate at some point over the years, but you kept going back. Maybe you only bought three months of medication at a time?
$200 for a basic annual exam is also off-the-charts in most markets. This vet can't stay in business with these prices, which also makes your story very suspicious.
Too many red flags in your story to be believable.

You also said they used anesthesia to clean his ears. Is the dog aggressive? If so, maybe they are just quoting you outrageous prices because they just want you to go away?
