Apple follows this little known practice called 'inventory control' and black listed every single stolen device IMEI # so the next time you connect to WiFi it turns into a brick.
I guess maybe they can turn WiFi off and enjoy...I don't know.. The calculator app?

Our company had a shipment of like 10 iPads and iPhones stolen after it arrived--they were taken by an employee after they were delivered. No problem: filed a police report and ordered more. Then, about 2 months later, one of those devices got turned on and hit a network somewhere a few miles outside town. Company notifies police. Police drive out there an arrest the employee / perp.

I suspect most of the items taken from the Apple store are intended to be sold more than used

I’d prefer they just left them on and use them to track down and arrest the looters.
