PSA: Ida victims, don’t sign anything!

[sarc]The tarpers are coming to your rescue[/sarc]
I know that some of you will be returning to your homes in the coming days to assess damage. Contractors from all over will be flocking to your areas. Lots will offer free tarps if you just “sign this document” that allows them to handle your claim.
Some of you will be feeling helpless and might see this as way to start the healing/recovery process. Please, don’t do this. If you can’t tarp your roof yourself or can’t afford to pay someone outright for the service, look to friends, family and neighbors. They’re out there.
A lot of these contracts are binding agreements to guarantee that the contractor gets the job (when they can get to it). You can lose your house or face levies or liens with some of these scam artists. It’s all in the fine print.
Don’t sign anything this week at least. After you’ve shed your tears, taken a few deep breaths, clear your head and make informed decisions.
Godspeed.

The massive incoming flood of hurricane scammers....

Great advice.
A bunch of unlicensed idiots are probably headed your way too.
Be aware and look out for your more naive neighbors.
Anyone that steals from grandma should be placed in a stock for a week.

Special place in hell for people who try to take advantage of folks after a storm like this. Thanks for the info.
For anyone who can't do it themselves, there are plenty fine folks on this board who will be happy to help you. Everyone stay safe and keep your head up.

They had a roofing company drive through my neighborhood last night. Lol

Also, here on the MS Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Katrina, FEMA was putting on tarps for free.
Don't know if that will happen with Ida, but be on the lookout for that.

Licensed ones are bad too. That piece of paper doesn't weed the crooks out

Don’t leave out the carpet cleaning/restoration companies. I get so ashamed of my industry when a disaster happens.

My elderly neighbor already fell for one and signed some paper for tree removal. Of course, he didn’t give her a copy.

And..... NEVER....NEVER... Give a contractor any money until he has actually done the work for you.
AND be sure to check the work that was done to be sure you are satisfied.

Watch out for the mitigation companies. Those will be there early on to make their money. Servpro collected some fat checks in SWLA for services that were not always necessary.
