SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The latest illustration of just how out of whack the Bay Area housing market is shows local counties overwhelming the United States map, when counties are drawn proportionate in size to their property values.
Real estate tracker and data enthusiast Max Galka created the cartogram map and other intriguing visualizations for his website Metrocosm.
“To create the map (above), I took the total residential property value for every county in the U.S. (the contiguous 48 states), and substituted those values for each county’s land area,” said Galka. “Notice what a small portion of the U.S. land area is actually covered by the red counties.”

When i was in SF two months ago I was shocked at how freaking beautiful that city is. It is easily the most beautiful city in North America. It really is the proverbial "city on a hill". I guess the times I had been before I was only there for work or too young to appreciate it.
It looks like Rome. God I would love to live there.

The most striking quality is the stark difference in the affluent areas and the run-down, holy-fricking-shite neighborhoods. Take a walk through Tenderloin and you'll pucker that a-hole real quick.

I also like how the dark red can be anywhere from $40,000,000,000 to $1,000,000,000,000.

It is a very nice city. But the cost to live there really is out of control. You'll pay around $650k for something around a city in the south would cost $150k.

You don't just pay for your home. You pay for the job opportunities and for the Golden Gate bridge, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Monterrey Beach, the Red Woods etc. The amount of things to see and do around SF within a 4 hour drive is staggering.
