Where you are from is where you grew up, the place that shaped who you are as a person. If you're traveling in Europe and meet some fellow Americans, where are you from is where you are currently living.

No one knows where Andrew, Louisiana is so I usually just tell people who are from other states that I'm Lafayette, or 2 hours west of New Orleans. If it's someone from south Louisiana I tell them that I'm from west of Maurice.

I lived in New Orleans for 4+ years and would tell people not from Louisiana that I was from New Orleans because it's easier than attempting to explain where I grew up.

Not just yankees. I was born in NE LA but have lots of family from Alabama, specifically Lower Alabama. When school got out in elementary school, I went there for the Summer. It never failed that when I came back to NE LA for school, I was placed in a speech class because it took me about 2 minutes to get a sentence out.
