for doing so little.

A lot of mental stability goes into being a pro poker playing since they basically play nonstop.

A kid from my high school makes about $250k a year playing professional poker. He won a couple $1m tourneys a few years back and just plays in tournaments every other month or so.

He was a douche in high school and still appears to be one based on his Facebook but I wouldn’t mind trading lifestyles and am jealous he found success like he did for doing so little.

if he's making $250k/year playing tournaments then he's probably one of he top 20 or so tournament players in the world

did you go to high school in Germany? Russia?

I don't know any but it looks like a terrible game to be a pro in.

I could think of much worse ways to make money, if you are good enough to consistently make money playing.

If I had money to blow I would do it way more often. I don't play if I feel like I can't afford to lose the money. It changes the way I play too much.

Most people who play poker go when they have spare money, and though they can play fairly well they don't have a bankroll and cannot weather the inevitable losing streaks. I've seen players who thought they couldn't lose actually cry when they went all-in and lost it all.

No matter how well one plays, if s/he has no real bankroll they aren't a pro.

Any true pro grinds out an incredible amount of hands and has learned to not tilt. Most pay their bills from rakeback, knowing if they play a certain amount hands in a month at a given level, they will get X amount from rakeback. This is a must given the variance.

Wrong.

Source: I have played well over a million hands of poker and know (or use to know) many professionals. Being a poker pro is one of the most soul crushing professions out there. Pros still tilt. And rakeback grinders are pretty rare nowadays since a lot of sites have cut down on rakeback perks.

Doubt it. Very few tourney pros are pulling down $250k/year.

know anyone that does it,

The brother of one of my friends was doing it, last time I checked.

He was doing well enough to do it for at least a few years instead of working.

I love the "my friend plays poker professionally" people. Yeah, your friend making 30k undeclared at a local dog track =/= professional. And if he's telling you he makes anywhere near or above six figures, he's full of shite

i was a part of that world a good chunk of last year and there is one guy i'm quite positive makes 6-figures consistently but none others. all cash games and in one of the few areas where you can still make that kind of money playing live

online? no. not in America, and basically not in the world. with all the bots, rings, sharing, and solvers out there, it's almost impossible to win (especially 6-figures)

tournaments? no.

doug polk had a great video about what poker players really make last year, but people still believe the myths

Hell, even someone like Lex on twitch is confirmed busto for just about his entire career. Dude probably has a few hundred grand net worth after dumping 10+ years into poker. shite is soul crushing and he grinds 10/hrs a day 4/5 days a week.

I would be shocked if there are more than 500 pros making more than six figures/year worldwide. A lot of the overseas pros also live in places where they don't pay tax and the US dollar is strong, so they don't need to make six figures to have a high quality of life.

The downvotes reflect the jealousy. I’ve done it for 5+ years now. The variance is insane. Just wanted to see what others would share...
