Do you have to have the title notarized to complete a sale in LA? Read some places online saying yes and some making no mention.

Just do it. There are title places all over town that handle everything.
A notary might charger $25. Isn't that worth your peace of mind. Title, Bill of sales, and license plate stuff.

Yeah I'd like to but do both parties need to be present?

No, you can sign it over to them. Just make sure you get a bill of sale.

I thought if the sale was in state the title is the bill of sale?

You don't HAVE to, but it's worth it to do it. Get the bill of sale and title notorized, it will save you from potential headaches.

There are a couple of ways to legally transfer a Louisiana MV Title:
1. Have the seller's signature notarized; or
2. you need to have two witnesses watch the seller sign and subsequently have a witness go see the notary.
Eta: Chewy, just go to your bank, sign the title with their notary, and let the notary sign and stamp it. Then, it will be ready for your future buyer.

Just bought a car at private sale last week. The title place we went did everything including notarizing and typing up the bill of sale. Both parties were present.

The problem is that my dumb arse signed the title over to a buyer already but didn't realize it needed to be notarized.
Went and got the title from the guy and got the seller's signature notarized.
They didn't say anything about the plate though so I'm assuming I don't need to turn that in anywhere.

You might want to delete that second paragraph. Chewy's notary may not have acted on the up and up.
Yes, you will need to cancel the plate. This can now be done online.

Go to a notary, its not expensive and will protect you from any potential problems down the line.

So most notaries won't notorize it without both parties present? Or they are not supposed to?

The notary would have needed to see the seller sign. It sounded like it was previously signed by the OP or signed by a different seller altogether.
It won't be a big deal. It happens all the time.
