You just posted a story based off the first line in the article and in which the rest of the article, one that would probably explain some of it is hidden behind a wall.
You have to sign in or subscribe to see the rest. Did you literally just state that you are a journalism graduate and then do this?

I've seen this stat. Haven't read up on it for the details. It certainly doesn't match my experience of practicing law in Louisiana. What is true is that blacks usually have longer rap sheets which hits them with sentencing. And I do agree that sentencing for non violent offenders needs to be reexamined--but for ALL races.

A journalist SHOULD do their homework in order to get all the facts pertinent to the issue.
Sadly, in this world today research doesn't exist past the point that they want to make.
Once again experience would go a long way on understanding the real world of the working man.

kind of makes the whole...

meaningless. It is comparing apples to oranges. You mean a longer rap sheet might get you a stiffer sentence? Seems racist to me

Maybe that study accounts for rap sheets. I would imagine it would. I can't really agree or disagree with it. It's not what I've seen in Louisiana state courts is all I can say. Probably the crux of it is blacks are more likely to need a public defender. Public defenders are usually competent and very experienced but they're also often overwhelmed with case loads.

I thought that statement was from the article
I just can't see a study being done that compares everything in order for them to make the statement blacks get longer sentences. to me you would have to do the study based on set criteria
The judge
Rap sheets are identical
Parish/county is the same
circumstances of the crime are the same
Public defender or criminal defense attorney
so many variables that I don't think it is even possible to do a fair study

My DIL is one. I don't know how competent. Most cases are plead down. She is never overloaded. Most of her cases are blacks but her territory is mostly black people. A lot of her clients have pryors. One had to be moved to a jail farther away. It's highly suspected he had a witness killed.
Her experiences go a long way toward my thoughts concerning Black people and jail time. Another source is:

3rd to last column keeping in mind census. only 13% of the population is black.

HEY, WATCH IT BUDDY. ....
I said my DIL is public defender but that is her part time job. Her full time job handles the everyday cases other lawyers do.

Racism = Power + Prejudice + Action
this is the common contemporary progressive definition
i was actually thinking of making a thread on the poli board about it. if this is "racism" then we need a new term for what formerly was "racism", or just an expansion of bias/prejudice

It is a fact that blacks serve longer sentences than whites do for the same crimes.
Its also a fact that blacks have a much longer rap sheet than whites on average. Repeat offenders get longer sentences.

Are you outraged that men serve something like 60% longer prison sentences than women? I'm guessing not.

You are right. That was a little harsh and insensitive. My apologies to Heather.
