Puh-tah-toe. Nobody says that.

My GF is spanish and says al-lew-minnie-um for aluminum.
The Brits even spell it differently, aluminium. That adds the extra syllable.
I had a professor who would not pronounce s as a z or sh in any word. Tissue was tis-sue, not tish-shu. And lose was loose, not looze, for example. He wasn’t foreign either. Just weird. It was a long semester with him.

I’ve heard well-read people in podcasts and news say homogeneous as: Homo-genius and I’ve always thought it was huh-mah-gah-nus.

Same.
Y'all have the experience of reading and understanding a particular word hundreds of times, but never hearing it pronounced out loud? Then you try to drop it in conversation hoping you say it correctly.

I always made fun of a dude in high school who pronounced Socrates as " So-crates." Never let him live it down.
Later, in nursing school, I read hundreds of times about the process of a lung collapsing called atelectasis. No teacher ever said it aloud in lectures.
Fast-forward 4 years, and I'm working in a hospital, and I told my Director of Nursing that my patient had a history of "A-tell-eck-tass-iss". She properly corrected me as it's "at-tuh-leck-tuh-sis".
It was my So-crates moment. Karma.
