Talk to your ex and see if you can get primary custody & you'll give her an "allowance" to cover gas to & from for visits.

That's a tough spot to be in. 3 hrs isn't terrible, and is much more manageable than moving across the country.
Have you thought about sitting down with your kid and ex just to see what their thoughts are?
Could you reasonably commute to work from somewhere in between like Brenham?

I think your mind is already made up.
How old is the kid?
Oh wait; he's 7.
Yeah, sticky situation. At the basic level it's
Kid vs job
Idk

I take back everything I already posted.
Someone as indecisive as you doesn't belong in a position of leadership and influence in a large profitable company.

I'd take the job and deal with the longer time + distance I'd have to spend in the car to see my kid.

As it is now, I have him between 60-70% of the time. This wouldn't be possible if this plays out and I move. I would be limited to every other weekend, holidays, and some extended time during summer, maybe even the entire summer. He's 7 and we are very close.
Seriously, as a committed dad with joint custody of my kid I cannot even fathom how you even have a question to answer. It's a freaking job versus your son. If you are honestly debating this, you are not as good of a father as you think you are. Sorry if that hurts, but it's the truth.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, try to split it halfway. 1.5 hours isn't bad at all.

Hell I could drive 3 hrs a day and be fine with it.

This, she may give him up to be with you, she may not. You have to have that conversation though. Approach it honestly. You know better than us how she will react, but be honest about all off your concerns. It cannot hurt.

Definitely. I make decent money and almost never see my kid(s). I rarely hear complaints.

How about you actually have a sit down talk with the kids mom and explain to her the situation? She may see the benefits to the kid and agree to meet you half way when exchanging the child.
I would even go as far to have the 3 of you talk (you, fiancé & baby mama). Between the 3 of you, you can figure out what is best for the little one. And that's what is important here. Good luck, man.

This place is between Austin and Houston. If you had to pick a half way point to meet, I don't think you could go wrong here.

You are asking if you should choose a job over your child?

There's no decision to be made. Your first responsibility is to help raise the kid and you can't do that long distance. Decisions have consequences. You can ask the new job folks if you can work from Austin but if not, stay in Austin, Dad.

I'm not sure how it's even a question. He spent like three paragraphs describing how awesome the job is and like a half sentence saying how ok the kid was.
It took you twenty years to get here career-wise, you can get back to the same position kid-wise in seven.
