No, you’re quite literally the only person I think I’ve ever heard say that. Even crazy sad politicians who are addicted to lying concede real wages are down

Ok yea, I'm sure all these bureaucrats who compile cold, hard data for the BLS are just consistently committed to one big lie over decades.
Instead, let's trust politicians who leverage their campaigns by mobilizing voter discontent.

Well considering they alter the formula for the CPI to fit their narrative, I agree

The ENTIRE POINT of the thread is you SHOULD be able to afford 2 kids on $100k… easily

No, they do it based on changes in consumer behavior. You're looking at a basket of goods for things that consumer actually buy.

People don’t buy energy?

Energy is part of headline inflation which is factored into real wage growth.

I wonder if people currently older than 50 will ever come to terms with the indisputable fact that "necessities" have gone through the roof, while most luxuries have plummeted?
Sure, there are some luxuries that have kept up with/exceeded inflation, but the stuff "your parents wouldn't have dreamed of buying back in their day" are dirt cheap these days. Tvs, computers, cell phones (!!!!!!), streaming (I'm loaded up on streaming services and I pay less in 2025 dollars than my parents paid for cable in 2005 dollars), etc etc.
All that shite is cheap as hell. A person can certainly forego many of those items, but ultimately that has a relatively small effect on their finances.
When will these people realize that cutting out "wants/luxuries" doesn't have nearly the same effect it had 40 years ago?
Let's not even touch on the fact that many of these olds despise the notion of remote work, while simultaneously advising young people to move out of urban economic areas and live in exurbs/rural. That's really rich.

My high deductible health plan that doesn’t cover shite costs more every 2 weeks than my internet and streaming services costs every month.

Inflation isn't bad when you take out the stuff that people need!

One politically-biased economist posting a cherry-picked graph on twitter for argumentative purposes has nothing to do with how the BLS measures real wage growth. Food, energy, shelter, and used cars are all included by BLS.

I can include food as 0.05% of the weighted average and voila, it's "included" as part of the CPI.

Cool - but it is more like 14%. The calculations are all transparent and published in detail.

Urinetrouble - “give me an example”
tOT - “here’s an example”
Urinetrouble - “that example doesn’t count because it disputes my claim”

They've got transportation at 16% or so. That seems a bit high; are there that many truck nuts out there?

The graph I previously posted is based on BLS real wage statistics, which doesn't have those categories stripped out. So yes, tweet by Paul Krugman indicating what the CPI would be without those categories doesn't dispute my claim at all. In fact, the tweet that was shared even had a little disclaimer on the bottom as to why it is misleading and gave the headline CPI number.

Lifestyle creep is a real thing. It takes discipline from both parties to see it and stave it off.
