I understand the 35 training hours and passing the exam, but outlining the experience I'm fuzzy on. I know several people who got their PMP without ever having been an actual project manager.

What are they looking for in the experience and do any of you have any advice to give someone starting their application process?

Either lie or take the lesser PMP certification. They just want money. I am considering a PMP if my employer will pay for it. I have around 5 years running different projects with limited process control. I was basically herding cats for five years and put that as PM on the resume.

Funny, I was just filling out my experience questionnaire thing yesterday.

Mfers want a 500+ word description on every project I've managed. I have managed over 100+ projects in the past 5 years lol. I need to also figure out what to put down to be accepted.

How do they expect ypu to have PM experience if you dont have a certification?

Thats like med school application requiring you to have already conducted surgeries to qualify for admittance

PMP is not required to be a Project Manager. I got my PMP several years after becoming a PM.

Whaaat? Yet submit a CV for a job posting and you're limited to 1,000 characters per job when it's powered by Workday.

That's fricking insane. I've managed projects for 20 years, and don't have a PMP, precisely because I just have experience managing successful projects. So, there's that. I spend almost $1,500 a year renewing certs how that my useless employer doesn't reimburse them (yet they advertise my certs to get work,) I won't get another one unless they cut the check. Although, did you notice in the recent bill that was passed you can now use 529s to pay for certs and training?

This has my interest. Is there a rigid list on which ones?

They don’t make money by denying people to take the test. You would be shocked what they take as “experience”, submit what you have and see if they accept. No harm in trying.

With creative wording you can turn telling the intern to go get the office coffee into a PM experience. I would just take whatever you've been in charge of/responsible for and how you led a team (a team can technically be you and one other person) in doing XYZ, which was integral to the overall success of project ZYX and was accomplished under budget and on time and other good things like that.
