14 day trip? average of 2 days in each city? 7 cities?

I would set up the following stops....

Drive down from Chicago..
Night 1 - stop in Memphis maybe to a blues club/check out Graceland. BBQ...

Leave Memphis - go though Oxford(maybe do lunch there?) head to NOLA.

Two nights in NOLA

Go to Gulf Shores. Visit the FLora-Bama/hang on the beach for two days. maybe split your time in Destin 30-A too.

head up to Atlanta. check the city out/baseball game? Check out the CNN center/World of Coke/Clairemont Lounge.

go to Savannah for St Pattys day. if you are from Chicago you may appreciate the party there.

GO to Charleston. loop to Asheville NC. Blue ridge Mtns.

Then head up to the DC area. then go back to Liberal Paradise(Chicago)

UNDERATTED PLACES
- Birmingham deserves some praise strictly because it is getting better. Made huge strides in the past few years. worth the stop if you were curious. you would be surprised.

OVERRATED PLACE
- Nashville is overrated IMO. food is so-so. Music, while good is obnoxiously in your face about how good it is. Not a very pretty city IMO. Save your money and go to Austin.

Skip these and thank us later

You live in Baton Rouge. Sit on that for a little while.

You can skip Charlottesville.

North Carolina:
Charlotte?
Asheville?

Both solid, but Charlotte could be skipped. It might not be a bad idea to hit the coast at some point.

South Carolina:
Greenville?
Charleston?

Solid choices

Savannah?
Macon? We love the Allman Brothers
Atlanta?

You can skip Atlanta. Augusta might be another spot worth checking out if you like golf.

Tennessee:
Gatlinburg?

Nashville?
Memphis?

I would skip Chattanooga, but it's not bad.

Alabama:
Birmingham?
Mobile?
Montgomery?

Skip Montgomery. Instead of going to Mobile, go to Point Clear to the Grand Hotel and then to Orange Beach. Make sure you heck out the Flora-Bama. Try to time this leg of the trip to coincide with the annual Mullet Toss around mid to late April.

Mississippi:
Oxford?
Jackson?
Tupelo?
Biloxi:

For the love of God, don't go to Jackson. Biloxi is nothing special. Try the small towns like Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian instead.

Louisiana:
New Orleans?
Baton Rouge?

For New Orleans, the best time to be there is for French Quarter Fest. For Baton Rouge, the Blues Festival plus an LSU Baseball game would be clutch. Make sure, however, that while you're in Louisiana, you make a trip to Lafayette to get some Cajun culture while you're in the state.

Dauphin Island, then to Gulf Shores, then to Perdido Key, then to Destin, then to Panama City Beach, then finish it with a few days in Cape San Blas.

Skip Baton Rouge. Definitely check out Lafayette instead. Take 90 from NOLA to Laffy, swing through New Iberia, get haircut, win.

Oxford
Clarksdale ~ Blues History.
Vicksburg ~ Civil War History. Antebellum B&B, Casinos.
Natchez ~ Lots of History, Many Antebellum Homes etc.
Baton Rouge is 85 miles south on Highway 61. In fact, you can follow 61 From Clarksdale to Baton Rouge....off the beaten track. ~~ Check out Alton Brown's River Road Trip for food ideas along the way and other ideas.

I would fly into Nashville head east through Appalachia and down to Charleston, don't skip it. Head south seeing Savanah until you reach I-10 and stop in a few spots in FL say Blue Angels HQ in Penscacola, Battle ships in Mobile, Biloxi, Pass Christian, NOLA etc. Haul arse through Baton Rouge, be sure to skip it, and hit 190 to Livonia/New roads and head up LA 1. Cross bridge to St. Francisville and hit the Great River rd Hwy 61 north to Natchez, don't skip it. Head north on Natchez Trace(Grant's march through the south) to Port Gibson then get back on 61. You'll see the "Real" Delta, Onward, Rolling Fork, Panther Burn and Clarksdale, don't skip it. Then into Memphis for a night and either fly home or take I-55 all the way home. Tupelo has Elvis' old house and that's about it so don't lose a half a day trying to see it. Oxford looks like a poor man's Natchez or Charleston and it'll put you back a half a day also.
