It's not the driver's fault, it's just how he was raised. I know plenty of good drivers who have never hurt any dogs

I hate to see dogs loose in the backs of trucks. I don't even like to see them in the back seat with the windows rolled all the way down. Sure, they "always" stay put and are fine, but all it takes for the dog to see something that makes it react and poof, there goes Fido. Senseless. Oh, and centrifugal force, too.
Just buy a $50 kennel and keep the dog in that for the few minutes ride where ever you need to go. It's not that complicated and the dog really doesn't care. Unless it is about staying alive.
