This photograph, taken from Morris Island, South Carolina in September 1863, is one of the few combat photos from the American Civil War. It depicts the USS New Ironsides lobbing shells into Charleston Harbor while people on the beach observe the bombardment. Other U.S. warships can be seen further out.
