.
This armor is from the Yamato’s sister ship, the Shinano. She was originally laid down as a Yamato class battleship in 1940. But before completion was converted to an aircraft carrier. She was commissioned in 1944 and sunk by an American sub only 10 days later. After the war the US took the 26” thick armor plating that had originally been intended to use on the main turrets before she was converted to a carrier. The Navy test fired an armor piercing 16” shell used in the Iowa Class main gun and this was the result.

If you have to die in battle, dying in a tank is usually the best way to go. One second you’re there, the next you’re completely obliterated. At least that’s how it usually goes.

The USS Alabama that is docked in Mobile Bay has 16" guns. They are quite impressive. When my son was in the scouts we would "camp" out on it every summer. We got to sleep in the bunks that the sailors used. It is a really cool thing to tour if anyone has the time.
Those guns could be fired individually (at different targets). It could launch a 2700# armor piercing projectile 23 miles.
(not my picture...)

That level of violence is fascinating.

I took my youngest son there a couple of years ago on his college Christmas break. We love going to war museums together and have been to small and large ones all over the country. That ship is cool as all get out. There's all kinds of places to crawl around in that should probably be off-limits.
