My Aunt had one, I remember that rear mounted, air cooled engine had the weirdest sound. Made like a whistling sound.

The Corvair had an available turbocharged engine as an option. That may have been the whistling sound you heard.

Probably the fuel system (they were kind of known for a lot of issues, this among them)-

I have a feeling they aren't students at Sequoia Junior High, but I did think it might could use a little color adjustment after what I figure is a bit over 60 years since the photo was taken.
