Hitch a ride to go hike, ski? And ride the bus around? Just waiting for Bertha to run for more than a few months without breaking down so they can maybe finish the tunnel before you're dead?
The OP will have a great time enjoying all the outdoor activities he likes to do without a car and paying the rent he can't afford downtown or south lake union...screw it, he can take his chances in the rainier valley area. Or commute from Shoreline, Kenmore, etc.

Seattle. Just visit if you've never been. It's the opposite in every way of Phoenix.
I'm not a heat and desert kind of guy.

Yes, but not downtown. Seattle is expensive but there are more affordable alternatives not far from downtown

Yeah, you could live downtown without a car. Most anywhere else would suck. It's ridiculous that a city like Seattle doesn't have a decent light rail system.

Saw where they are expanding it, but will be many years for most of it

They bit off more than they can chew with the tunnel. I'm sure I'll be dead before a citywide light rail system happens.

Visited both within the past year and the responses from everyone are pretty accurate aside from the "can't live in Seattle with out a car" statement. Between uber, lyft, and such you have pretty decent public transportation in the monorail, great bus service, and a couple of bike and car share companies like Car2go and the electric BMW one( can't recall the name).
Sports are huge in both towns with PHX having the big 4 majors (and WNBA Ha) and Seattle having MLB, NFL, MLS, WNB, while eying to get the Sonics back and possible an NHL team.
I am surprised with Nurse's rent pricing. You'll pay a bit more in Seattle, BUT the tax free income should help with that.
Now only if Seattle could land a Top Golf….

I'm in Ballard, and it's been pretty easy. I think it's actually easier in Ballard, Fremont, Cap Hill than it would be to live downtown without a car.

Seattle is closed. Move to Phoenix.

There are 2 in PHX metro area. One in Scottsdale and one in the east valley in Gilbert

Seattle is part of eco-topia.
You will have access to products and services that eco-utopians demand of the marketplace. food, clothing, transportation.
Its not horribly far to Vancouver Canada and Juneau Alaska.
Seattle Vancouver and Juneau are a piece somehow. knit by Native Americans. I have friends in Seattle, Vancouver BC and some of the islands.
Phoenix = heat you will not believe. Learn Spanish.

Juneau is basically a suburb or satellite of Seattle 900 miles away.
If you're into the outdoors, don't see how you could go wrong in Seattle though. In addition to the mountains nearby, you also have salt water and plenty of freshwater activities.

Seattle public transportation is actually quite good. The bus system is great in the city and works well for commuters from other cities and adjacent counties. I use the ferry to get to Bainbridge Is., the water taxi for Vashon and light rail to get to UW and the airport. I would like to see light rail expanded east, but that is decades away. I only use my car when hiking outside the city.

Hmm. I guess we disagree on what constitutes quite good.

How so? I live in Queen Anne near the Fremont Bridge and work downtown. I do all my in-city travels by bus/light rail.

Unless you live in Scottsdale don't come to Phoenix. Scottsdale is amazing and is huge but the rest of the Phoenix Metro area, other than Chandler and Gilbert which are just ok, is a dump. Seattle is beautiful but its as liberal as San Fran and the Seattle Freeze is real. There is PLENTY to do outdoors in both places, Seattle has more water stuff but Scottsdale has more hiking and golf, so I guess it kinda comes down to the kind of people you want to be around. If you want to live around middle-upper class white conservative people choose Scottsdale, if you want to live around millennial liberal tranny Asians you would like Seattle and if you want to be around white trash and Mexicans choose the westside of Phoenix.

Honest question: which cities would you say have significantly better public transportation systems? I grew up in SF, my mom lives in Portland, I have done a lot of business in Atlanta, DC, Houston, etc. so those are my best comparisons. After 33 years in BR, I think any public transportation system looks good!
