Possession in Latin is not as strict as it is in English. In particular, when referring to a group of people. They don't have to be defined by an association, to be a group.

Alumna is the Latin singular female. “Alumnae” is plural.

Alumni is accepted and used by so may institutions for decals/plates/etc because it's the implied membership of the collective.
It's when people actually say 'I'm an alumni', it's improper.
Like an NRA or USMC sticker on a car implies the owner is a member of the group.
