People who can/could read but can’t/couldn’t write

I don’t know why but I find myself suddenly thinking about this. Like it’s a hard concept for me to grasp but it happens, especially a long time ago.
Reading something without being able to write that is just a weird concept but you hear about it time to time in the histories.
Yes, these are the things I wonder on a fine, cold/crisp Saturday evening

Maybe it’s referring to being able to passively understand a language in writing but not being able to compose one’s thoughts in the language. I’m that way with Spanish.

That could be one reason for sure. But I suspect that’s more true of modern times.
I just think it’s interesting that someone can learn the rules necessary to read but can’t replicate.
Now that I think of it, I can read a kindergarten’s level Italian due to Spanish and a little bit of French but still. Trying to put yourself in that mind frame is interesting
