Did Payless not have an online presence where you could buy shoes?
Shoes are the kind of thing you want to try on before you buy.
I'd be willing to buy shirts or pants online. Shoes not so much.

I don't know anyone that actually shopped there. Places like Shoe Dept sell brand name shoes that aren't really more expensive.

There was one in Chalmette. It's small. But Walmart carries shoes. A Shoe Dept was built, then it doubled in size. Stores such as JC Penney and Kohls have expanded shoe selection. Not that far away.
Meanwhile, Payless had a small selection and not a lot of stock.

My wife and I were talking about cheap shoes in stores like Payless and started talking about the old "Show Town" stores they had in the N.O. area back in the day.
At least Shoe Town had $1.00 Jazz tickets. Start in the Terrace and wind up courtside or in the Plaza in the second half watching Pistol Pete.

But there's more margin for error with shirts and pants.
I want shoes to fit exactly right or it's going to be annoying.

Somewhere out there Crazy George is smiling as another discount shoe store bites the dust.
For the man who invented "the wave," it must've been demeaning to be forced to promote crappy shoe stores and shitty restaurants.
