Is 1 coat ever acceptable for an interior job?
I just received a quote and the contractor recommended 1 coat everywhere except in the kitchen and family room where he recommended two.

Are you using the same color???
If not, unless he can predict the future, he won't know until he gets the first coat on.
I'm no professional but I honestly don't know if I've ever done anything that didn't require a 2nd coat no matter how thick of nap I used. There were still spots that needed another coat.

Probably ok if using the same color as before.

Absolutely with an included primer. Did it in our bedroom. (SWIDT)

One major factor would be the quality of the paint.

It's going to be a light gray over a light beige. The painter sad it wouldn't be a problem. I'm sure he wouldn't leave unless it looked good, or at least I wouldn't pay him unless it did. I guess my question is if it looks good when he's done is that good enough or can there be future problems down the road with only applying one coat. He is recommending some super expensive Benjamin Moore paint, btw. Thx ot

I used the "Ben" line from Benjamin Moore when I had my house painted.
Some rooms required 2 coats where the colors were drastically different, others (bathrooms, etc) werent too far off and only required 1 coat.

I used some of the top if the line, expensive BM paint and it covered very well. That's why the painter is saying one coat. It's a gr eat paint.

Get a small sample of the paint and put a coat in one area next to the trim in the room that has the most offset color

It depends. I painted over purple with a lime color (that included a primer), and that required three coats. When I painted over the lime with a pink color (which also included a primer, it took only one coat. All paints were Valspar and eggshell.
