My microwave seems to work sometimes. Sometimes when you heat up something it works and the item is heated up. Other times, the item may be luke warm at best. GE Profile, model JE2160BF03. Anything I can do to repair it or is it time for a new one?
TIA
TIA

I wouldn't frick around with a microwave...if you work on it and screw something up, you get nuked while you are standing there waiting on your popcorn to pop.

On this topic when Napoleon joins us...Any preferred brand on microwaves? Mine no longer holds the time and some of the buttons don't work. Gotta set it for 2 minutes and stop it after 1 if you only want 1 minute. Microwaves just fine though
Unfortunately I can't go over the range so I'm just looking for a small counter top one. Opinions?

A microwave is one of the only things that can kill you even when it's unplugged. FWIW.
A magnetron either works or it doesn't so if it produces any heat it isn't that.
If it makes a loud noise when it's not producing heat just replace the diode (like $10) if it's silent then replace the capacitor (like $35)
Of course it's easier to know if you are getting power to the transformer. (NEVER check for power on anything past the transformer, it is thousands of volts and will blow up your equipment)
When I diagnose I look for power to transformer first, if it's there I look at the diode, then capacitor, then magnetron then transformer in that order.
If the 115 is not present going to the transformer it's likely a bad control. Though I would check your door switches and make sure the top and bottom read complete circuit when closed and the middle reads open circuit when closed, and all three vise versa when door open.
If nothing come on at all then it's a fuse.
Judging from the issue being intermittent though, it could be control related.
TLDR.. Microwaves are really complex and diagnosing them over phone/computer is really really hard to do.
If you do attempt work on it, make sure you discharge the capacitor, if not have a defibrillator close by.

I like Bosch Countertop units.
But to be honest, I would again just get a cheaper one with the features you want and a high wattage.
No real brand sticks out more than any others. I would say I see a lot of GEs that fail though. But GE is a popular brand in this market and that is mainly why I see so many that have failed.

You've now scared me out of touching my microwave. I thought it might be something easy to fix as like I said mine works fine. It's just some buttons don't work. But I think I'll just spend $150 on a cheap one and trash the old one. Once again Napoleon

Wait what? Seriously?

A good start would be to quit heating up spoons before you eat ice cream. Sparks = not good

You can get a real nice one for $150. Microwaves like TVS are pretty much disposable now days.

Yea I'm limited because it has to fit in a hole in my kitchen. So I have to have something in the 21" X 12" size. I wanted to go over the range, but its tile back splash all the way up the wall so nowhere to mount it without removing that tile. Not a job I feel like taking on

Well you have convinced me not to try and work on this one. Any recommendations for repair man on the Northshore?
