It can definitely be done on short cut grass that's mostly hard dry dirt or clay under it. My friends and I played bball on dirt in the Ozarks.

I have a friend out here in Colorado that has rubber like mats with tiny holes in them, actually was a nice bouncing surface

Slip some of those pothole baws a franklin or 2 and have them lay you out a slab right quick.
