Impossible to quantify "that bad". Yes, they are bad for you. Worse than water, but not as bad as say Fireball.

Like with just about anything else, so long as taken in moderation it won't be terrible for you.

As all current research has found diet soda sweeteners to be safe per se, a tentative conclusion is that diet soda is harmless when paired with an otherwise controlled diet; many people who have bad diets consume diet soda in an attempt to do "less damage" - this results in an incorrect conclusion that diet soda leads to an unhealthy condition.

once again, another day, to laugh at the OT fitness experts - just lol

They're not healthy and nutritious for your body, but they won't stop you from losing weight. Some say that diet sodas cause people to crave sugar and binge on sweets, but that is more about a person's self-control that the diet soda. I drink diet soda, and it does not make me crave anything, but I guess every body is different.

My take is, of course they're bad for you but one every week or so isn't going to make or break anything in the grand scheme of things.

I don't even know how people can drink Diet Coke. It tastes like turpentine! And in the commercials they talk about how great it tastes. I just don't get it.

Most of the studies against diet soda have been pretty inconclusive.

I once switched to diet soda and gained 20 pounds.

The study concluded that eating artificially-sweetened foods would eventually lead to greater weight gain than eating foods sweetened with regular sugar would.

You can have sugar after. It cancels out

Learned something new today. I just assumed that whatever they put in diet soda to make it sweet was bad for you in some way.

Still not going to drink it because it tastes like shite and I want to have teeth when I'm older, though.

Let me tell you my story.

I lost 80 pounds and diet soda played a huge role in that. I used to drink 2-3 regular sodas a day. But when I started getting serious about getting the weight off, I swore it off cold turkey.

I missed the caffeine, plus drinking something other than water helped curb the cravings between much meals that were already smaller to begin with. I found this stuff called Dr. Pepper 10 and it was/is amazing. It tastes damn good- without that bitter "diety" taste and now I can't even drink regular soda any more. It's too syrupy.

As the weight fell off and has stayed off, I get all these people in my office- most are 50-70 pounds overweight- say things like, "You know, that stuff is so bad for you." I don't say anything because I don't want to be an arse, but I'm thinking to myself, "Yeah, so will hypertension, diabetes and the coming heart attack from being so fat."

Bottom line, water is the best solution. But for me, diet sodas give me the kick I need without the sugar and calories. It's played a major role in me turning around my fitness. I now run 40+ miles a week, bike, play racquetball, etc, but still drink about 3-4 diet sodas a day along with a good bit of water. If it works for you, then don't feel bad about it.

ETA- as others have noted, there's not a clear scientific study one way or another that has put this to rest. Do what works for you. If you're one of those people switching to diet soda because you're trying to lose weight, then give it a try. If it works, then congrats. You're much healthier cutting weight even if means you're drinking artificial sweeteners. But as stated above, try to drink a ton of water too.

I will never claim to be an authority on diet sodas, but I've had to speak to more than a few doctors that have a very negative view of them. During my late wifes battle with cancer, every Oncologist she had ranging from her original treatment at Ochsner, to her clinical trials at MD Anderson, Tulane, and The National Cancer Institute all told us not to drink diet sodas. Their opinion was more than enough to scare me off of them.

I'm as fit as anyone on this board and I drink them. My son is more fit than I am, and he drinks them.

I had a very similar experience. I switched to Diet Dr. Pepper because I started my weight loss before Dr. Pepper 10 even came out but managed to lose close to 70 pounds and have kept it off ever since.

It's absolutely comical how people will give me shite for drinking a diet drink but they themselves are 50 pounds over weight.

Congrats on your journey to a healthier lifestyle!
