Well, be aware that muscle weighs more than fat.

What weighs more, a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks?

Are you an idiot?

Lifting increases muscle mass. Increased muscle mass increases resting caloric burn.

This bro-science has been proven false time and time again. 10 lbs of lean mass increases caloric burn by maybe 80 kcals a day.

OT Workout Board: Lifting While Trying to Lose Weight?
Good idea?

Why would do any exercise that cause you to burn calories be a good idea if you want to lose weight? You should just switch to an ultra light beer and the pounds will fall off of you.

quote:

I've lost 40 lbs through diet alone and want to lose another 15-25 lbs. Should I be lifting?

I went back to lifting for 2 weeks, and my appetite became ravenous. I also put on a few lbs (I realize that the scale can be misleading when putting on muscle).

1. Congrats on the weight loss.
2. Yes, you should be lifting. Lifting weights and exercising in general will cause your body to gain weight at first and that is completely normal, but then after a month or so the body begins making changes at the cellular level (I could go into more detail but it took me 4 years of undergrad to get a bachelors in kinesiology, 2 years to get a masters degree in medical sciences, and the 1st two years of medical school to realy understand it so I'll spare you the pain), and you will start losing weight. Plus you will be gaining muscle and chicks dig muscle.

3. The biggest negative is that your body does not want to burn the fat it has stored so exercising will make you want to eat. However, if you watch what you eat and keep your caloric intake below your caloric expenditure you will lose weight. I would suggest eating a chocolate and peanut butter granola or protein bar and drinking a bottle of water after a workout. Chocolate and peanut butter is the best combo to satisfy the post-workout munchies without consuming >200 calories, atleast that is what my principles of exercising training textbook said. I know it sounds weird, but it kept me from wanting to swing by McDonald's after a workout or binge eat after a workout. I would also suggest getting a BMR calculator on your phone, or you can be one of those d-bags that wears a fitbit, so you can get a rough estimate about how many calories you actually burn a day, and then you can plan your diet accordingly.

You certainly should be lifting. I've cut 20-30 pounds on a couple of occasions. Cutting with weights will keep it off longer. Cutting just with cardio makes you look fairly
Bad and it doesn't seem to last as long.

My current routine is 50/50 weights and cardio. Feeling pretty good and looking pretty good for near 40.

80 calories bro. That's like three sips of your pre-workout.

Here's my real life idea of why this isn't exactly the way it works. Our bodies have an incredible buffering system. Eat a 100 calories more or less each day for a month and our bodies do not move off of its set point weight. This is why we can go years of not counting calories every day and not move the scale.

To move the scale takes a deficit or excess outside of this theoretical range. So in real life while perfect adherence to a diet works, when you eat one little extra snack, or one more mich ultra, you bounce right back in to the buffer region for the day. Unless, you add exercise to your routine, then you can do one more lap, a few more reps and make up for deficiencies in your diet.

You wont add muscle and lose weight. You have to pick your battle.

The short answer is to lift.

The long answer is that you must choose a goal. Then you need to build a diet, a lifting regimen and do cardio in a manner (yes there's different types of cardio) that is appropriate for where your body is now in relation to that goal.

Lift and watch your intake. The think about adding muscle mass is its REALLY easy to stop if you find yourself getting too "swole."

Alright. I started back lifting tonight. Worked chest, bis, tris, and back. Did dumbbell chest presses x3, dumbbell butterflies x3, barbell curls x3, reverse barbell curls x3, a superset of barbell nosebreakers and tricep presses x3, and some dumbbell lawnmower starters x3.

I'll do bodyweight lower body exercises tomorrow (squats, walking lunges, hamstrings, calf raises, and abs).

I'm not going to weigh in every morning; instead, I'll use my clothes as the measuring stick. I'll also give it a little longer this time to see how it works and try to watch my food intake a little more closely while continuing my keto diet.

Open to any lifting advice. Wish me well!
