My impression was they are required if you work in a union shop.

In some states, yes. You also don't have to work at that union shop.

"Right to work" laws essentially make mandatory union dues illegal. Right-to-Work restricts freedom, but it's all for the greater good because it's pro business.

In La. you can choose not to join a union. But if you join, the monthly dues are mandatory.

I have always wondered if non-union guys get promoted quicker than union guys in union shops because they aren't limited on what they can do.

I once worked with some guys at a mill that had a union. We talked about right to work, and I asked if any of them were not in the union. All were.

I asked how it was presented to them when they started work there. They said it was not mentioned there was a choice. It was like, "and this is where you sign up for the union." I can't recall for sure, but I don't think they knew any employees who chose not to join.

If you work at Associated Grocers you don't have to pay dues to be covered by their agreement with the U.F.C.W.

On the other hand, if you want to work out the pipefitters (198) or electricians hall (995), you have to be current on your dues to take a call.

What's optional is the political contributions (C.O.P.E, or Committee On Political Education fund). You don't have to pay into that. Dues are strictly for the general fund of the hall, paying the salaries of the people that work there and keeping the lights on.. C.O.P.E. is the where the political money comes from. They can't make you pay into that.

There is an amazing labyrinth of Federal rules the halls have to follow when it comes to watching their cash flow. Much moreso than the average no-nothing poster on TD would know about. They have to keep track of something as benign as giving out a couple free pencils and clips when a member pays their dues.

If it's a union shop, whether in a right to work state or not, any open slots will be bid on (filled by seniority) unless the position is in management.

But at a place like Associate Grocers where the stewards are all sold out to the company, if someone takes a bid and management doesn't like them, they'll run them off anyway. The stewards won't make any waves. It's really pointless in those situations (right to work states and a union shop) to pay dues. The only means an average employee has to stand up for themselves is to know the contract inside and out and know who to deal with at the local/NLRB.
