I have to close to a year's worth of food. solar powered backup energy. I've also got several fruit bearing trees, grape vines, blackberry and blueberry bushes. Blackberry and blueberry produce in early summer. I have 4 types of grape vines, each produce at different time. Obviously there is overlap. The fruit trees of course produce the latest. I keep heirloom seeds, but I don't intend to depend on them. BTW, grape vines and berry bushes are easy, easy to grow.
I have devices around my property to let me know when intruders come around. I hope some people try to "take" my stuff. I have more ammo and guns than I could use even in a war.
Sadly, the vast majority of people I've talked to have said the same sentiment that they'll basically wing it/live off the land. Some of them have wives and kids. You people are so foolish and lazy. It's not hard to prepare. I don't know if I'll need it. But in the words of Billy Graham, if God doesn't judge America, he'll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.

I'm going to memorize the entire Bible. When all of the others are destroyed, I will be indispensable.

It's fun to talk scenarios and what ifs, but most of you badasses would be dead within a couple of months.

Group of about 20 total, 1200 acres half in timber half under till with a creek and well water out in BFE (nearest town is 10 miles away with a population of 1900), 16-18 months already stored food per person, plenty of arms, ammo, and med supplies. Most of the adults in the group have special skills, including a surgeon, an ER nurse, an electrical engineer, and four combat veterans (two Army, two Marine).
I think we'll be OK.

Haven't read through but I'm guessing most people don't have a real defined long term plan, myself included. Food, water, first aid, defense. Long term, food is a huge issue. Saying "I'm going to my family's 1000 acres" doesn't really answer it. Personally, we have family land with some pastures that's been useful for farming and seems fertile. We have some seeds and some knowledge about farming but that's it. Decent hunting and fishing but nothing for long term without some kind of development. So the honest answer for long term is not much of a plan really, food wise. A blank canvas with a lot of room for development but if something happened right now we might be in a fix.
Excellent post. I do believe that would be the most logical scenario. A great deal of people would be in a world of hurt, which is why I chose the cabin on the river island. But, any secluded place would probably work provided there is an abundance of water and food. Having spent a good portion of my life on and around a farm, I would like to think that I wouldn't be totally clueless.

You will be found and overrun by a roving band. Doomsday prep is comical.

I wouldn't be clueless living off the land. I grew up on a farm and am confident that we would manage to scrape by. I can set traps and snares for small game. Fish. I know which berries are good to eat. If we had to we could dig down and eat grub worms.
It would be tough, perhaps even agonizing times. No doubt.

Yeah, it would be tough, no doubt. With the kills/spiff alliance, the island would become a fortress. Here is an idea - we could create snags/hang ups that would trap a boat.
There are plenty of feed/garden supply stores in the area that would be a great starting point at growing food. The fishing in the river is always good, so that's an abundant supply.
Tough, but doable...

I'd find the biggest motherfricker in the place and knock his teeth out
Wait, that's for jail. Sorry, got my scenarios mixed up

Thanks assholes, I just spent the last hour scouring over planting info and guides.
Good news is I have a lot of good info. Bad news is it takes a lot more than that.
Sucks because it seems like a lot of work to do it (grow crops) "for fun" to learn, but worth it.
Next I need to find out what soil types I'm dealing with.

Honestly, you'd need to get the frick out of the United States, especially the eastern half of the country. Unless you find yourself as part of a large (1,000+) roving band, you're kind of fricked. Any stock and store will be sniffed out and taken by force no matter how well-hidden you think you are.
Specialized knowledge, especially medical, would be valuable. There are enough people who know hunting, fishing, and living off the land that it wouldn't set you apart.
Hypothermia would be a huge, huge issue for everyone in all but a few parts of the country. Lighting fire night after night isn't prudent - you're virtually dead in that situation.
Water would be a big problem for most as well. Your system can't take water right out of the ground in all but a few places given our digestive systems are used to modern plumbing and sewage.
My two choices:
1. Coalesce/lead a very large group of able men and women (like 1,000+) and go from there.
2. Get my butt down to South America - somewhere like Suriname or Guyana.

if you're really serious about growing food in an emergency, start now if you have the land for it
- disk/till area
- get soil pH in a good range (soil test)
- grow cover crops on your garden continuously until needed (oats, rye grass, buckwheat, sorghum, etc)
- work cover crops into soil, let them decompose
this process may take a few years but your soil should be capable of growing a LOT of food afterwards
from my experience (and reading experienced gardeners), it takes about 3 years to get soil in good condition.
there are things you can grow immediately on virgin soil but the results may be sketchy

Try drinking unfiltered and untreated water out of any ground source for a week and see what happens.
You'd get sick as frick with a quickness. Salt tablets sorta/kinda work, but that's not a long-term solution. You can boil water as well, but that takes something of a logistics trail and also leaves you vulnerable if you're lighting a fire.

I'm gathering my group and we are going to take a prison or better yet a nice lighthouse up in Maine. Snipers on the roof, fish in the sea. That would be pretty sweet.

Area I live is perfect for a SHTF scenario. No road access, 70,000 people in an area the size of Florida, amazing abundance of fish and game, relatively mild climate.
