I'm currently training for a half marathon, and I planed on running the old man river half in December. As luck would have it I won't be in town for that one. I checked around the area and it seems as if none of the races fall on my schedule Except the jazz half next weekend.

I'm not a novice runner, before starting a half specific training program I was averaging about 8 10 miles a week with the bulk of that coming from about 10 k on saturday mornings.

My longest run so far while training is 8 miles at a pace of 8:24( I started 4 weeks ago). I want to give a shot, but I also want to finish the race.

Do you think I should finish my program and wait for another race, or give the race next week a shot?

You should be able to easily finish a half

You can do it but if you're trying to run for time I'd wait and be prepared for one later down the road.

I don't know about easily....

I have a long run scheduled today (1hr 30mins) should I continue with my run program and treat the race as a training day?

sure

my best advice it to just not get caught up in the frenzy of the start and go out too fast, which is hard, trust me, you're adrenaline will be pumping and 90% of the people will be running way above their finishing pace, but try to not let that affect you

if you can run 8 miles at 8:30 pace, you can run 13 at 9:30

if you can run 8 miles, you can run 13. you get a huge energy rush from just being in the race atmosphere on race day.

when i did mine last year, the 8 week training program only had 11 mi as the longest single run.

you will be fine. just set some arbitrary goal time (say less than 2 hours) and aim for that.

Yeah that will be hard for me.

I eat clean, for the most part, do you have advice for a pre race breakfast or snack?

This is correct. If you average 8&1/2 for 8 miles you should be able to go another 5 miles no problem at a bit slower pace.

eat the same as you have been doing before your long saturday runs. last thing in the world you want to do is try something different and have the shits come mile 5

but eat a bigger lunch the day before and a slightly bigger dinner.

I usually eat a banana, is that enough for a half?

bring a gel (or 2) or cafeine bites in case you need a little energy boost during the run

i wouldn't use these during the half if you have never used them before. i tried it once on a longer run and it upset my stomach and made me cramp.

i would try one durning your long run this weekend to see if you like them .

I just ran the Brooklyn RnR half. My longest run was 7 miles and my last run was almost 3 weeks before the race. I finished in a little over 2 hours. You will be fine for the Jazz Half

I've run a half when my longest training run was about 10. You could probably do it on 8 if you pace it right. Negative splits. Start off very slow and speed up at 5 and again at 10 to your normal pace if you have it in you.

this, don't know your age or weight - 8:24 is a very good time.
