What is the best company to work for as an operator SE Louisiana?

Which sub industry is the best to work for? Nuclear Power Generation, Gas Power Generation, Refining, Petrochemical, Pharmaceuticals, Pipeline, Upstream?

Didn’t realize how many operators we had here. Seems like one of the best places to get solid info on company pay, benefits, safety culture etc.

I’m an operator at a major and would like to compare with some of you guys.

Currently where I am Operator pay is $41hr with Lead Operator making $43hr, 8% 401k match with pension.

Very interested to see how this compares to you guys at Exxon, Marathon, Valero and Shell

It’s really rustling some jimmies.

But that’s not the point of this post. Just a welcomed side effect.

How does your future look?

You can always tell the shortsighted when they bring up financials first.

What happens when the product you make drops by 50% tomorrow morning?

The one that makes you sit on a stool for 12 hours at a time in steel toes that you don’t really need but are mandated based on antiquated policies from yesteryear. The one where the engineers look down on you because you’re paid hourly. The one that gives you an hourly wage for your time with your family that you can’t get back. The one where the qualifications for it are high school diploma or GED. The one where you buy an F250 and then sell it on Craigslist before it gets repossessed because of lay-offs and you’re bad with finances. The one where your truck payment is more than your trailer payment. The one where your wife’s wedding dress is made of camo.

That one.

Well, I’m in my early twenties. Goal is to finish my 4 year degree online so that when I start a family or get tired of shift work I can move into HES/HSE or into a Specialist role. Already have my A.S in industrial technology.

Also am on the ERT, I’m super intersted in some of the full time firefighter positions at some of the larger refineries. Current company is only volunteer ERT.

These are contractors. Not operations.

So what sets one plant apart from another other than pay?

One thing I hate about my current site is the job qualifications. Have to know 3 different units, both the outside job and the DCS job. Split my time 50/50 one day inside one day outside.

I’m qualified on 1 batch unit (6 reactors) and 2 different continues units.

From what I understand this is not industry standard and the company is really stretching its manpower.

Future.

If they are crosstraining then basically you have no line of progression. No chance to dip your toe into management. You are all worker bees.

Ask yourself where you go from your current position. Then look at who else around you is legitimately qualified.

I’ve seen this move pretty often.

Operator > Lead Operator > Unit Specialist > Shift Supervisor

My current supervisor started in ops at 22 and is now 30
