How many people on here believe that our military now has the capability to use high capacity lasers from satellites in low orbit in outer space to vaporize or hit moving targets here on earth.

This concept was originally part of Reagan's Star War's missile defense shield from the 1980's almost 40 years ago.

Not I.

The power required to do that is too substantial.

I don't have a good feeling on whether we do or we don't, but it wouldn't shock me.

Val Kilmer and Gabriel Jarrett figured that out back in 1985

I know for a fact that the Air Force has a laser operated from an aircraft to "punch holes" in a stationary object. It tracks the object as the aircraft moves. It's all been declassified. Makes me wonder what's past that and we don't know about.

Was it a dream where you see yourself standing in some sort of sun-god robe on a pyramid, with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?

Yep, my initial thought as well.

Don't need it since we have the rail gun.

And it's on a boat with a huge power plant so there's that too

They were only this far off in the 80's so surely they have it figured out by now: LINK

Is the refitted LPD now nuclear powered?

And a boat is actually a sub not a ship

The correct answer is Yes, and it was been perfected and fully operational for at least two years now. How many of these are operational right now and whether they have been used in combat yet I have no clue. (They will probably vaporize me tomorrow for even posting this.)

Don't know the technical aspects or how they solved the power issue as that is fully classified.

I do wonder if all these drone strikes, are really drone strikes and not Star Wars laser strikes.

Open Desert in Middle East seems to be perfect testing grounds to me

There's already a very powerful "laser" in a rogue state's hands-

The energy requirement of putting a laser in orbit can be overcome by using a chemical oxygen iodine laser

LINK

These operate in the megawatt range and can easily bring down a missile. They were originally developed in 1977, and have been tested in airborne operations aboard a Boeing 777 in 2010. Boeing is the industry leader in directed energy weapons, do a search for Boeing and laser and you will have a lot of interesting stuff to ponder, as in have all of N, Korea's missile tests just been exploding due to poor design or some external force?

The technology that the military has is inconceivable. We are probably much more advanced than laser beams.
