We were taught this way as early as 3rd grade. Albeit it was a blue ribbon school
Just seems like basic common sense imo. I was in gifted (at a public school in the ghetto in NBR no less) starting in 2nd grade and this type of stuff was also expected of us as well.

Put that expectation in the syllabus and always mention it every time before the due date. Kids need constant reminders the first few weeks before they get inline.
Once in a while use one student who screws up as an example just to scare the little frickers.

She took a point off for my son writing the pound sign in front of his class number.
What a count. That would warrant a face to face arse chewing.

Why would that matter?
Teachers are paid to teach the curriculum/objectives set forth by the state or school district.
Student grades should not be a reflection of teacher opinions, whether or not they got a letter signed by a parent, or brought in canned goods for a food drive, etc. This happens too damn much in the schools.
Student grades should be a reflection of their academic assessments about the curriculum.

I understand the problem with physically sloppy papers, but you're grading their knowledge of the subject matter. Why should someone lose two percentage points for something that got a bit crumpled or the margins had writing? That's ticky tack.

Part of my expectations for class assignments. Why can't they follow my instructions?
My instructions and expectations are clearly provided and communicated from the first day of school until the last.

I wouldn't deduct points for writing in the margins, but I would make sure they knew about it--perhaps a warning system, then take off points if it continues. As far crumpled, torn or stained work...yeah, deduct away.

Oh come on. He isn't asking them to have the same political opinion as he does. He's telling them to turn in neat work. That's something that carries over into many facets of life.

As long as you're not trying to have sex with them you should be ok.
