OT parents, what's your opinion on the best present a young kid can get?

We live in such a commercialized world today. Things brightly flash and whizz and beep and boop. Every commercial selling your little tyke some plastic hunk of crap that will be forgotten as soon as the new wears off, then become just another obstacle to find jammed in the bottom of your foot at 2 am.
But sometimes the best presents aren't the glitz and the glimmer.
They are simply possibilities.
An order of mine came recently in a giant box. You'd think the box itself was tbe real present. I've seen it become a house, a submarine, a cave, a spaceship, a slide, a hideout and many more.
All the boxes seem to find the same fate, and it's great.
A cardboard box of sufficient size should provide hours of entertainment if your little ones have even an inkling of imagination.
Do you remember any box adventures when you were a kid?

Board games. Simple, interactive, fun and a learning tool. Let me reiterate the interaction aspect of this. It gets a family to the table instead of everyone in the house being stovepiped in their own little world of phones and tablets.

Depends somewhat on the kids age, but a hooker and some blow are reliable options guaranteed to please.

I'm all for letting kids have an imagination and the box idea is awesome.

Well they don't. Kids today have no imagination and I'm pretty sure it's from the sensory overload of screens in their faces all the time. There's no reason to imagine something that's not there when Nintendo and Pixar have already illustrated shite much better than a tiny little kid brain can come up with.

The box is pretty great - my 10 year old still likes to make shite out of them.
But an air rifle is hands down the coolest gift for a young boy. That, or a dirt bike.

They called me a monster because I tried to throw away the last big one they had because it was torn to pieces.
So I just order something that requires shipping in a big box and then get them stuff to decorate it with like crayons and stickers and whatsits.
They'll be exposed to and asking for the latest shiny gizmo (to be promptly forgotten) soon enough.
A box is worth its weight in gold for now.

I bought my wife a new steam cleaner a month or so ago. Our 7 yr old girl still has it in her room. She's painted the inside like the interior of a space ship and taken old paper towel rolls and taped them to the "wings" (the top flaps of the box) for guns, and still plays Star Wars in it all the time. I think she's played with that box more than anything else since we first let her have it.

My son loved Legos. One thing that bothers me about them nowadays though is it's very hard to find a box of just Legos. They all come in these kits designed to build one specific thing. Like this for example...
My son has one this still on display in his room. And while it's cool and he use to play with it a lot when he was young. I still find it a bit sad that Legos now come with instructions. That was the cool thing about Legos back when I was a kid. It was just a box of different pieces that you could build into a space ship today, a fort tomorrow, and battleship the day after that. Instead of learning to follow instructions, you learned to use your imagination.
