Mother-in-law has 2007 Expedition limited with the 5.4. Died in the road yesterday and towed to dealer. They are telling her today the fuel pump is bad and will cost $1100 to replace.

Does this seem high? I would have thought maybe $600-700 range.

The motorcraft pump (Ford OEM) is $400 alone from the parts house. The dealership is probably charging her $500 for it but 6 hours of labor seems high. I would think a mechanic could do it in half that time.

Ask to see an invoice for the work.

I changed my own FP out once. The part alone costs about $400

They are marking it up on you.

FYI, whenever I run into an issue where I need a mechanic to change a part for me I buy the part on Amazon/Ebay then bring it to Express Oil Change & Service.

They charge $65/hr to install it for you.

I changed mine out in my driveway with my father in less time than this...

$270 on Amazon

Call Express and get a quote from them. They can look it up and tell you how much they will charge you for labor

Most likely the fuel pump driver module. Common failure on the F150 located on the rear axle above the spare tire. Not sure about location on Expedition. The module cracks causing moisture to get in and short out the module. Easy to change two bolts and plug it in. Cost about $60 from Amazon.

Amazon Replacement

Fuel pump - $400 + 30% markup = $500+
Labor - 7 hours X $65 = $455

Add in environmental disposal fee, supplies, etc.....

Still, the dealership cost on that fuel pump is probably only $300

The dealership knows they have her over the barrel due to the fact the vehicle would have to be towed elsewhere if not fixed there. If you do get it fixed elsewhere the dealership is going to charge you a shop fee ($100ish) for looking at it plus a storage fee for it sitting on their lot ($35/day). If it were me I would call another garage and see what they will charge to replace the fuel pump (I am betting this is exactly what is wrong and not the module) and get it in writing. Then go back to the dealership and haggle on the price some. I am betting they will work with her on it some.

Of course if you or your dad is halfway handy you can replace it yourself in an hour or two with he right tools. If you are not then I would see if the dealership will work with you some and just have them fix it.

Why? The module it a known common problem and has a much higher failure rate than the pump. You can take the module off and look at in a couple of minutes.

Because the dealership IF meeting Ford's shop guidelines will have already looked at that. But yes the module is a known failure point and the shop should have checked that.

1st off never ever go to a stealership to have non-warranty work done on a vehicle.
2nd any shop will add a markup to the price of the part.
