Transmission on one of my work vans is shot. Just got a quote for "at least $4300, if nothing else is wrong" to replace it. It's a Chevy Express 2500 van, about 10-12 years old, 200k+ mileage.

I'm not a car guy, but that just seems really high. I did a quick google search and found refurbed transmissions w/ warranties for about $2,000. Should it really cost another 2k to install?

TIA

Yes. Refurbished transmission w/ installation. Refurb comes with a 100k mileage warranty.

Buy $2,000 transmission. Go to mechanic and sit there and watch him install. Time him and pay his hourly rate.

That’s not how it works. Mechanics have a book that tells them the approximate time it will take to perform a particular repair on a specific vehicle. They use that to determine their fee.

but you should be able to get a drop and replace for a couple hundred if you shop around.

Just find a trusted mechanic shop. Changing out a tranny on a Chevy is an easy job.

4300 is what I paid to get a factory crate transmission installed in my old 3/4 ton truck, so that's not too outlandish. Yes you can get them rebuilt for cheaper though if it isnt totally ruined.

That is likely a 4L80E transmission and they are not the cheapest thing to rebuild.

Ordered my transmission from O’Reilleys for my 04 Tahoe for about $1400 plus tax. Paid the labor only to my local shop and profited. 2 year warranty on a rebuilt. Looked brand new.
