OT Mechanics COntaminated Brake Fluid

2011 GMC Acadia
Car at Firestone for tires.
Guy calls and says my brake fluid is low and contaminated. He sees no leak around the master cylinder. Is this some Firestone ploy to get more money out of me.
I am thinking if there is no leak then I can just add some brake fluid myself.
TIA

Being Firestone I would think it is a scam. They do good work, just constantly try to upsale.
How low is it? If you have never added oil it could just be a result of typical brake wear.
How old is the oil? Same age as 2011 car? Changing oil about 5-8 years isn't a bad idea.

No. The car does not consume fluid.
The fluid being low is a sign of pad ware. It is normal. If the front pads ware a 1/4 inch each then it would be an inch low.
You will need brakes soon.
As for contaminated, IDK. Sounds like a money ploy to me. You should change out the guild every 100 probably. It can get dark.

Don't put transmission fluid in your brake fluid reservoir.

Firestone would always try and tell me something was wrong with my car every time I got an oil change from them. Most of the time I fell for their bullshite. frickem

I haven't ever flushes brake fluid on any vehicle. Unless you have a leak, he's BS'ing you. If you do have a leak, water can get in and contaminate it. Tell him to show you the leak. If he flushes it with a leak, the same thing will happen.
If your pads are worn down and the fluid wasn't topped when you got a brake job, it could cause it to be a little low

brake fluid is hydroscopic. It takes a while do do any harm once moisture enters the fluid. They may be technically correct but are just wanting your money.
What i do is buy new fluid, take the sprayer out of any bottle and get a cup and insert the straw into the master cylinder reservoir. Empty all the old fluid and pour in the new. It's really that simple. The new fluid you pour in is more than enough to counteract any small amount of old fluid left in the calipers and lines.

My thoughts exactly. They tried some crap on me once with my 03 silverado saying I needed 2500 in front end work. Took it elsewher and only needed about 800 dollars of work.
Not sure how low I will check this afternoon after I pick it up. I have never added any oil.

He said there was no leak that he could see. That is why I had bells and red flags going off in my head.
Probably need a brake job if anything. 78k miles and original brake pads.

here's your opportunity to ask him to prove to you that the fluid is contaminated.
Do not let this chance slip by.

It's still optimal to bleed the lines though. It's really not very hard. I did it last summer on our Honda using this method.

frick firestone. They tried to charge my wife $200 to change an air filter (which I changed a couple months before) and I am 99% positive they put a nail in my tire when I was getting an oil change.

I didn't watch the video, but it's not hard to do with two people. All you need is a wrench and a couple bottles of brake fluid

quote:it isn't hard to do. But it's unnecessary tbh. Just emptying the reservoir and replacing with new fluid is more than everybody else does anyway and the new fluid does mix with the old.
