OT: How long did you guys mope after your dog passed away?

So my dog of 9 years (a mixed chihuahua) who has been the most energetic dog I ever knew. Barks at everything, runs around nonstop, never sits still, and refused to ever let me hold her unless she was absolutely dead tired.
Well, yesterday morning she was okay running around letting her do her business before I left. Got home late and couldn't find her out around the house like normal. Walked over to the room with her bad and she was just laying there. She was extremely febrile, didn't come to me when I called her, didn't walk or stand when I picked her up, and when I held her just leaned her head like she knew it was it.
Had to bury her this morning. Not the greatest feeling in the world. I took for granted my family dog thinking she'd always be around, but I guess since she was my first pet (got her right before katrina) that wasn't a fish it hits a lot harder than not.

That sucks, I would probably get a new one but still be bummed for a while.

i was actually surprised how quick i got over my last one dying. I think getting another dog helps to, gives you something to think about other than your dead dog.
The day i put her down was rough though. I went in to work late and found myself getting choked up all day. I was fine the next day for the most part though.

I had to take one of my mini dachshunds in a few years ago to put him down after a fierce bout with an intestinal disease. Handing him over and watching him die while he looked at me really disturbed me for a while. He wasn't even my prized 32# miniature dachshund either.

A few weeks
The first day I was an emotional wreck at random points of the day.

I'm sorry for your loss. It is as hard as losing a family member, sometimes harder. It took me almost a year before my eyes didn't mist. Getting another dog helps but I waited about 6 months to do that.

My condolences. When we've had dogs die, it usually took me a few weeks to get back to normal.

There's always a badass in these kinds of threads. "It's just a dog."

Sorry to hear. Be consoled knowing that you gave the little dog a great life. Go to the local rescue and give another pup the chance to make both of your lives happier.

I've got a young child who almost died and was left with significant brain damage. So yeah, I don't mourn pets. it's just a fricking dog. You get over it quick.

Just because you had a sick child doesn't mean you still can't love and mourn a pet. It's not an either/or situation. And newsflash, everyone in the world isn't just like you. You might get over it quick(ly), doesn't mean others are wrong when they don't.

Pretty selfish of you to say something like that. I am really sorry about your child (that is an absolutely terrible thing to have to go through as a parent), but sometimes have a little respect for other people and other living things they love and stop trying to be a bad arse on a goddamn message board just like they would have for you.

In my family we do not run out and get another dog. I fell like it is disrespectful to the dead pet. Morn as long as you need. Then when you feel ready, get another. From the pound, of course.
