Have any of you ever heard anyone differentiate between rebar cover and rebar clearance?

Yes, but I haven't had to estimate rebar for so long that I can't remember which one is which. Pretty sure that one is how much concrete is needed between the rebar and the exterior surface of the pour and the other is the space between individual rebar members on the interior of the pour.

A debate similar to that happened this morning where I work. You happen to work in a chem plant in the Geismar area on a new project?

I always call out like this

<--- 3" CLR

Clear meaning clear cover

Pretty much how I've always seen it done, when annotated on a detail

thanks for that writeup

Other thing I forgot to mention was that pack rust can expand the rebar many times its original volume, causing the concrete to spall and break away. Epoxy coated bars helps protect against it as well.

Cover is the amount of concrete "covering" the rebar.

Clearance is the space between the rebar and forms or dirt grade.

Spacing is the distance between the rebar.

They're just considering it from top of bar only. What you're talking about is still considered cover.

Really, it's the all the same, since they're almost never differentiated in the specs/plans. I know I've written hundreds of reports in site manager and used them interchangeably. People generally just call it one ouror the other. It's the first time I've had a pm want both referred to.

In all reality, I think I'm just dealing with a man hating lesbian that wants to argue. Which is strange to me, because I have many lesbian friends in Nola, and this is the first time I've dealt with that.

Cover only refers to distance from face of rebar to face of concrete and rebar clearance could refer to distance from rebar to concrete, nelson studs, anchor bolts, etc.

ETA:

I always annotate the way Croaka posted.
